TOMRA Sorting Food has developed an optical sorting system to detect and reject aflatoxin in nuts such as peanuts, almonds and hazelnuts and dried fruit such as figs.
SEEING THE INVISIBLE
The Detox™ laser sorter utilizes a special optical design that allows aflatoxin contamination to be detected and removed. This laser technique can capture extremely low intensity of light reflected by the fungus.
When this type of fungus is illuminated with a particular wavelength, it reflects light with a distinctive pattern - a unique fingerprint. The laser system recognizes this fingerprint leading to the removal of aflatoxin contaminated material at high flow rates, even though it is invisible to the human eye.
