Optical Design Engineer

As part of the optical design team your job consists of research and development in the field of optical systems. In a multidisciplinary team, you take the lead in the optical developments for the next generation optical sorters. The optical systems include laser scanning, spectroscopy and camera technologies.

Besides participating in development projects, you spend a fair amount of time on scouting and testing new technologies.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Design and test prototypes
  • Transfers innovative and creative ideas into feasible solutions
  • Participate in the development, the building and the optimization of prototypes, existing machines and applications by means of projects.
  • Plan your work and report on the progress.
  • Follow new technologies and evaluate them for implementation
  • Guarantee the necessary documentation of designs to enable a flawless installation in our sorters.
  • Improve and support the current optical systems

 

Candidate profile: 

  • Solid optical design experience extended with an interest in software and electronics.
  • Solid experience with optical design software (OpticStudio/ASAP/…).
  • Hands on experiences in the use of optical test equipment
  • Basic programming skills (Python, Matlab, C#…)
  • Self-motivating and having an everlasting curiosity towards new technologies.
  • You are a team player with strong communication skills.
  • Willing to sporadically travel abroad to customer locations and other TOMRA locations.

Education:

  • Master degree in Photonics, Master degree in Physics or Civil Engineering with experience in optics or similar by experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the field of optical design

Other skills/abilities: 

  • Fluent in Dutch and English. Both verbal and in writing.
  • Experience with machine vision is a plus
  • Experience with data analysis is a plus
