Life at TOMRA: A Great Place to Work

TOMRA was proud last night to be named the number 5 best place to work in the Great Place to Work® survey in Norway, where the company is headquartered, in the category of workplaces with 200-499 employees. TOMRA in fact has 3400 employees worldwide, and it is staff’s own evaluations of the company’s work and culture that are used to determine companies’ rankings as a Great Place to Work.

Leading the resource revolution

TOMRA was founded in 1972 on an innovation that began with reverse vending machines, which collect used beverage containers for reuse and recycling. TOMRA has since expanded its scope to provide cutting-edge technology for sorting solutions in the food, recycling and mining industries. Altogether, TOMRA has approximately 95,700 installations in over 80 markets worldwide. All these technologies seek to contribute to sustainability and gain as much productivity as possible from the world’s limited resources, tying in with the company’s vision of leading the resource revolution.

“I joined TOMRA in 2000, and was attracted to the company because of its mission,” explains Chuck Riegle, in Government Affairs & Compliance for North America. “The wasting of natural resources and pollution through inefficient production and disposal are not trends – they are a reality we need to face if we want to sustain the quality of our lifestyles. Being engaged with solutions to these challenges is the value TOMRA brings to the table.”

The technical innovation that ties all of these products together – across reverse vending, recycling, food and mining – is sensor-based technology. “TOMRA is founded on technology and innovation. Having this work so close to the core of the company gives a good foundation for managing technology with a long-term perspective. We continuously investigate emerging technologies and solutions to see if they can help us improve our products and offerings,” says Marius Fraurud in Research & Development, based at TOMRA Collection Solutions headquarters in Norway. 

“We have a culture of openness and learning. TOMRA is large enough to give our engineers a lot of opportunities and challenges, but still small enough so that everyone can make an impact. We have in-house competence in all aspects of engineering, and it’s a great feeling to use our engineering skills to help the planet become a better place.”
