The paper sector uses talc as filler and coating material, for example, while ceramics specialists need white, high quality talc for catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters. To yield useful pure talc, calcium carbonate – also white – must be removed accurately. Traditionally, talc was sorted manually and with wet methods, such as flotation, at decreasing grain sizes, while color sorting machines have been used to pre-sort recovered material or enrich valuable minerals.
