Leading sensor-based sorting equipment provider, TOMRA Sorting, has further expanded its portfolio of customers in the Middle East by securing a contract with National Cleaning Company for its new Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) sorting plant in Kuwait. The brand new €2.5m plant, due to be operational by early 2014, will be capable of processing an impressive 40 tonnes per hour of MSW using the latest sensor-based sorting technology.
Established in 1979, National Cleaning Company is one of the largest waste management companies in the GCC, employing over 7,000 staff. The new plant will process waste collected from households within Kuwait City.
Global demand increasing
MSW contains recyclable fractions such as plastics, mixed paper, cardboard, and metals. With global demand increasing for these materials, pushing up their market value, TOMRA’s advanced TITECH automated technology at the new plant will enable National Cleaning Company to maximise recovery of the plant’s infeed material. Four TITECH sensor-based sorting machines will be installed at the plant, using state-of-the-art systems to optically sort mixed plastics, LDPE film, PET and HDPE/PP.
By using the latest advances in sensor-based sorting, including near infrared (NIR) and visual spectrometers (VIS), the new MSW sorting plant will achieve a fraction purity of up to 95 per cent, with recovery yields of up to 85 per cent – compared to the 10-20 per cent recovery rate achieved by manual or semi-automated techniques.
TOMRA was the first choice of technology partner
Commenting on the new contract win, Kamal Muslmani, Regional Operations Manager at National Cleaning Company, said: “We are confident that we’ve made the right choice by partnering with TOMRA Sorting for this new plant. With a proven track record and world-class solutions, TOMRA was the first choice of technology partner when planning our new plant. TOMRA’s TITECH technology will enable us to separate and recover valuable fractions to meet both the quality and quantity demanded by our end markets.”
Tasos Bereketidis, Middle East Sales Manager at TOMRA Sorting, adds: “It’s very exciting to be involved in this new MSW plant. With demand for high quality recovered fractions rapidly increasing, our innovative and advanced sensor-based sorting technologies provide the perfect solution to recover these valuable commodities. We’re confident that National Cleaning Company will quickly see a significant return on its investment.”
