This year, Øya and TOMRA are testing something new at Øya Pluss:
a deposit return system for reusable cups!

Together, we are making it super easy to enjoy a beer in the most sustainable way - and get your deposit refunded directly to your bank account.

How it works:

1. Buy a beer → borrow a reusable cup

When you buy a drink, it’s served in a cup linked to your payment card. You pay a 25 NOK deposit on the cup – same as the environmental fee charged elsewhere at Øya – but you will get it back when you return your cup at one of the automated machines in the Øya Pluss area!

2. Drink, dance, enjoy

The cup is sturdy and ready to rock – just don’t throw it away! Stack up several if you like, you can put an entire stack in the machine at once. If you collect cups for others, only the person who paid the deposit gets the refund.

3. Return cup → Get money straight to your account

Find one of the TOMRA machines at Øya Pluss, insert your cup(s), and the deposit is sent to the bank account linked to your card. Depending on your bank, the transfer may take up to three days, but often it's faster.

4. We wash – you do the chilling

All cups are professionally washed before being put back into circulation.

5. Cheers again!

The cups are used over and over – saving CO₂ emissions, reducing waste, and making the Øya Festival even more sustainable.

Why a reusable cup?

Because reuse is a great choice for the environment. And because it's easy, and it works - research from NORSUS confirms it. Less plastic, less trash, more happiness.

Collection points at Øya Pluss

TOMRA's return machines for the festival's reusable cups are located at the following places within the Øya Pluss area (see map below):

  • at the main bar,
  • at the entrance to Øya Pluss/exit to the main festival grounds, and
  • next to the toilets.

NOTE: It is only possible to return the cups inside the Øya Pluss area.

Frequently asked questions

If you lose or discard your cup you will not be able to redeem your deposit. But should we find your cup afterwards we will donate the deposit to a worthy cause. 
No. Bars are not allowed (according to Norwegian food safety regulations) to refill used cups, so please return them after use. You can save and stack together several cups before you return them, should you prefer to do that. Of course, you can use your cup for water from the refill stations or to enjoy drinks from bottles or cans served directly to your hand.
Nope. When you buy a drink the reusable cup it is served in is automatically registered to the payment card you used to buy the drink. No apps, no separate accounts – just cheers and cheerio.
Return it to a collection point anyway. You will receive your deposit back, and we'll make sure the cup gets recycled.
Polypropylene (PP) – a robust material that can be used and washed many times before being recycled at the end of its lifetime. BPA free and safe for food contact.
At Rene Glass, using a professional washing line approved for food contact containers. They've provided washing services to Øyafestivalen since the introduction of reusable cups in 2019.

It can take up to three banking days after returning the cup, depending on your bank.

Many times! It easily withstands over 100 washes and lasts as long as it doesn’t break. Its CO₂ footprint is offset after just 6 uses.

We're piloting this new technology in a small area to gather insights before scaling up.
