Sort up to 100 tons an hour with just one person on the line. Capacity, accuracy and more to sell, from one robust machine.
Big harvests, sorted right.
Short on hands at harvest? With the 4A, one person on the line can sort up to 100 tons of potatoes an hour.
Going into storage, it takes out dirt, stones and rot, so you only pay to store potatoes. That matters: in storage, one rotten potato can put potatoes worth over $2 million at risk.†
Potatoes that are out of spec get a stream of their own, so you can still sell them. And when your potatoes come out of storage, the same machine sorts quality defects too.
LUCAi™ comes with pre-trained deep learning models, so the 4A knows good from bad from day one. You can also train on the machine for your farm's specific defects or foreign material.
What makes the 4A tick
LUCAi™ deep learning
The 4A's brain. Pre-trained deep learning models, so it knows good from bad from day one.
XCD user interface
The 4A's touchscreen. Clear, simple and the same across TOMRA sorters.
Pulsed LED+ optics
The 4A's eyes. They check both sides of every potato, with infrared to see what the eye can't.
Flexible three-way sorting
Two sets of ejection fingers: one for foreign material, one for out-of-spec potatoes.
The labor issue was a big pain point. Without the labor, you can't go through the potatoes... we just physically could not do it and get a quality product into the trucks.
Good help is hard to find. And it costs more every year.
You need a full crew on the sorting line for every week of harvest. But seasonal workers are hard to find. Skilled ones are even harder. And wages keep going up.
In the US, hired farm workers cost $19.52 an hour in April 2025, up 3% in a year.¹ And in a 2024 survey, more than 1 in 3 US and Canadian potato growers said they were short of workers.²
With the TOMRA 4A, you need just one person on the line.
¹ USDA NASS, Farm Labor, May 2025 (gross wage rate, all hired workers). ² Spudman 2024 Labor Survey of US and Canadian potato growers: 37% reported labor shortages in 2023. ³ CONASAMI, general daily minimum wage from 1 January 2026. ⁴ German Minimum Wage Commission, from 1 January 2026 (up from €12.82). ⁵ UK Government, National Living Wage from 1 April 2026 (up from £12.21).

New operator this season? The XCD user interface is clear, simple and easy to learn. And it's the same as on other TOMRA sorters, so your operators get up to speed fast.
Have it all, from one machine.
Fast sorting going into storage at harvest. Quality sorting when your potatoes come out. Both from the same machine
Going into storage:
Up to 100 tons per hour. The 4A takes out foreign material, clods, stones and rot, so only potatoes go into your store.
Coming out of storage:
Quality sorting too. The same machine also takes out quality defects, like green and rotten potatoes, at the lower capacity that job needs.
1 stream in. 3 streams out.
Two dedicated sets of ejection fingers do two different jobs. One takes out dirt, stones and foreign material. The other takes out out-of-spec potatoes and keeps them clean and apart. All at full capacity.
Your contracts are based on volume, so every percent counts. With 3-way sorting, out of-spec potatoes don't end up on the reject pile with the stones. You can still sell them, for processing, cattle feed or biogas
Store potatoes, not rot
Keep rot out of your store
Rot spreads in storage. Leave one rotten potato in the pile, and it can put a whole store at risk.† In a 10,000-ton store, that's potatoes worth over $2 million in the US, about €2.6 million in the Netherlands or about MXN 78 million in Mexico.† So the best place to stop rot is at the door. The 4A takes out rot, dirt and stones on the way into storage.
† Rot spreading in storage: University of Idaho, potato storage disease guide. Store values: US at the 2025 average of $10.80 per cwt (USDA NASS); Netherlands at the 2025 harvest contract price of about €265 a tonne (POC Contract Tool, via NAV); Mexico at the 2023 average of about MXN 7,800 a tonne in Sinaloa (Sinaloa state government).
Store potatoes, not dirt
Stop paying to store dirt
Here's the simple math. Say you put 10,000 tons of potatoes into storage, and 5% of it is soil.‡ That's 500 tons of dirt.
Wherever you farm, you pay for every ton in storage, dirt included. Storing that dirt costs about $45,000 a season in Idaho, or around €30,000 in the Netherlands.‡
The 4A takes out dirt, stones and rot before your potatoes go in. So you only pay to store potatoes.
‡ About 5 tons of soil in every 100 tons delivered: Royal Avebe, 2021/22 season. Storage costs: about $90 a ton through February in Idaho (Idaho Potato Commission, November 2025); about €54–63 a tonne in the Netherlands, the difference between field and storage delivery in NAV's 2026 cost price.
Robust Mechanics
Powerful where it counts. Gentle where it matters.
Rocks and stones in your crop? Fast, heavy-duty ejection fingers knock them out, along with other heavy foreign material.
There are two sets of ejection fingers, and each has its own job. One takes out foreign material. The other takes out out-of-spec potatoes. So you sell more of every ton
you harvest, at full capacity.
Good potatoes get a soft landing. Cushioned ejection fingers are available as an option, for even gentler handling.
LUCAi™ Deep Learning
Knows a bad potato when it sees one
Think of LUCAi™ as the 4A's brain. It comes with pre trained deep learning models. TOMRA has already trained them on large libraries of real images, so the 4A knows good from bad from day one and keeps sorting even when you're away.
Its eyes are Pulsed LED+ optics. They check both sides of every potato in high resolution, and infrared lets them see what your eye can't.
Got defects that are specific to your farm? You can also train on the machine for your specific defects or foreign material. So you get both: models that are ready on day one, and sorting tuned to your crop.
XCD user interface
Easy to learn. Easy to run.
New crew every season? The XCD user interface is the 4A's touchscreen. It's clear, simple, easy to learn and adjust. And it's the same as on other TOMRA sorters, so your operators get up to speed fast.
- Just one person on the line. Instead of a full picking crew.
- Keeps sorting when you're away. The pre-trained LUCAi™ models do the deciding.
- All three streams on one screen. See what goes where at a glance.
Your questions, answered
How many people does it take to run the 4A?
Just one person on the line, instead of a full picking crew. And you can still sort up to 100 tons an hour.
What can the 4A take out?
Things that aren't potatoes: dirt, stones, rocks, clods and other heavy foreign material. And potatoes with quality defects, like rotten and green ones.
Will the 4A damage my potatoes?
Good potatoes get a soft landing. For even gentler handling, you can add cushioned ejection fingers.
Do I have to train the AI before I start?
No. LUCAi™ comes with pre-trained deep learning models, so the 4A knows good from bad from day one. If you want, you can also train on the machine for your farm's specific defects or foreign material.
How does flexible three-way sorting help me get more from my crop?
Two sets of ejection fingers do two different jobs. One takes out stones, clods and other foreign material. The other puts out-of-spec potatoes in a stream of their own. So they don't end up with the stones, and you can still sell them, for example for cattle feed or biogas.
How does it stay accurate at up to 100 tons an hour?
It looks, thinks, then acts. Pulsed LED+ optics check both sides of every potato, with infrared to see what the eye can't. The AI decides what has to go. Then fast ejection fingers knock it out. That's 92% accuracy on foreign material, even at 20% incoming defect loads.*
Can I use the same machine into and out of storage?
Yes. Going into storage, it runs at up to 100 tons per hour and takes out foreign material, clods, stones and rot. Coming out, it also sorts quality defects, at the lower throughput that job needs.
Is the 4A hard to learn?
No. The XCD user interface is clear, simple, easy to learn and adjust. It's the same as on other TOMRA sorters, so your operators get up to speed fast.
