Turmöl boosts customer convenience with TOMRA S1 Rugged reverse vending machine (RVM)
Austria: With Austria’s deposit return system introduced in 2025, Turmöl saw an opportunity to enhance customer convenience even further. Known for making every visit quick and seamless, the petrol station network wanted returning drink containers to be just as easy as refuelling, shopping, or charging an EV.
To make this possible, Turmöl partnered with TOMRA to install the TOMRA S1 Rugged across its station network—selecting a robust, outdoor-ready solution that could perform reliably in busy petrol station environments and support a smooth, professional rollout nationwide.
Making recycling part of the everyday stop
Turmöl operates a widespread network of petrol stations across Austria, with a strong focus on customer convenience. At their stations, customers can access everything from in-store groceries and hot food through SPAR Express to car-wash services, fuel, EV charging—and now recycling too.
At one of Turmöl’s newest stations in Ried, Austria, the team installed a TOMRA S1 Rugged to collect PET bottles and aluminum cans, expanding on the existing system for reusable bottles and further strengthening the station’s offering.
Store Manager Michelle Riedelsperger has seen the impact firsthand: “Our station combines a SPAR Express, car wash, EV-charging, and now recycling. It's an all-in-one station. TOMRA S1 is good for our customers because they can bring back their PET and cans on their own, and so we have the possibility to focus on our customers.”
We chose TOMRA for the professional work and the perfect rollout for all our 67 stations in Austria. Together with TOMRA, we bring real convenience to our customers.
TOMRA S1 Rugged for semi-outdoor and outdoor use
Designed specifically for semi-outdoor and outdoor use, the TOMRA S1 Rugged is built to withstand weather exposure and high customer throughput—making it a natural fit for petrol stations.
“Our machine is very popular,” Riedelsperger adds. With many nearby stores closed on Sundays, the station experiences higher container returns and increased customer traffic.
This positive effect is reflected across Turmöl’s entire network. More customers are choosing Turmöl stations specifically to return containers, and often staying to shop in store.
As Andreas Kellner, Commercial Director at TOMRA Collection Austria, explains:
“The TOMRA S1 Rugged is specially designed to be very robust and for outdoor use and that's why it fits perfectly to the petrol station usage. After installing the TOMRA S1 Rugged, Turmöl has seen more new customers at their stations returning containers and shopping in store.”
Strong partnership and a carefully coordinated rollout
“Together with TOMRA, we bring real convenience to our customers," explains Walter Mazzulini, Head of Category Management Non-Fuel at Turmöl. Installation began in June, and by September, TOMRA S1 Rugged reverse vending machines were operating smoothly across all 67 Turmöl stations.
“From the beginning, the cooperation with Turmöl was perfect. From planning to installation, everything ran smoothly,” adds Andreas. “Our nationwide service network helped us install quickly, efficiently, and get every machine into running position.”
The result is a durable, outdoor-ready return solution that integrates seamlessly into Turmöl’s stations, delivering convenience for customers and reliable performance for store teams across Austria.
We collect around 300 PET bottles and cans per day, and on Sundays, it doubles. The handling of the machine is very easy because when the bin is full, we will get a notification.
