Øya Festival - Oslo, Norway

One of Norway's largest outdoor music festivals, Øya Festival takes place annually in central Oslo. At the 2025 festival, Øya and TOMRA Reuse conducted a pilot project to test a new automated program using the TOMRA Throw&Go™ system.

The pilot program at Oya Festival 2025 was implemented in a restricted access area on the festival grounds called Oya Plus. TOMRA Reuse integrated its deposit activation barplates for the reusable cups served at the main bar, and there were four TOMRA Throw&Go™ Mobile return machines placed in several nearby locations within the Oya Plus area.

How the pilot system worked:

  1. When patrons visiting the Oya Plus area purchased a beer at the main bar, it was served in a reusable cup with an RFID chip. A deposit fee for the cup was added to the price paid by the consumer, and activated on the cup automatically when placed on the TOMRA Reuse barplate at the time of purchase.
  2. The deposit fee on the cups was automatically refunded to the same credit card used to pay for the drinks when the cups were returned to any one of the four return machines in the Oya Plus area.
  3. Returned cups were professionally washed by the same contractor the festival used for all their reusable cups, which were then returned for reuse during the festival.
