The system in Lisbon, which goes by the name of CopoMais, provides a robust and convenient infrastructure to collect reusable cups in the city. Instead of using single-use cups and throwing them away after use, you can return the reusable CopoMais cup to the nearest automated return machine and get the refund straight into your bank account - simply by tapping your bank card or phone.
The collected cups are picked up at the machines by TOMRA and taken to a professional sanitization facility where they are washed and quality assured. Damaged cups are sorted out and recycled. Clean cups are then reassigned with the deposit value and made ready for shipment back to the serving establishments.
With a collection infrastructure of at least 17 automated return points in central Lisbon, the system provides a convenient way for bars and cafés in the area to make the shift to reusable cups and be compliant with the city's ban on single-use plastic cups.
