Global reverse vending leader TOMRA Collection has launched its new Basic Line, a line of reverse vending machines (RVMs) offering innovation and affordability to stores new to participating in deposit return systems (DRSs). The Basic Line is designed to offer a simple way to start collecting empty beverage containers for recycling while saving space and resources for retailers.

The first product in the Basic Line is the TOMRA B5™ Combi. It has a compact footprint of only 0.8 square meters, making it a good fit for small stores or locations with limited space to accommodate additional retail equipment. It also features plug-and-play installation for seamless set-up and a large 21.5" touch display for greater user-friendliness toward consumers who are also new to deposit return. The free-standing RVM can collect a combination of plastic bottles and cans in two different bins right inside the reverse vending machine, or just one bin for one material type.

TOMRA B5 Combi is launching first in Ireland, the latest region to introduce a DRS, which went live on 1st February. The system requires retailers to take back drink containers and refund deposits, as part of the country’s efforts to reduce litter and increase recycling rates. TOMRA is partnering with retailers to support the implementation of the system and provide convenient and engaging recycling solutions.

To make container returns more efficient for both consumers and stores, DRSs often utilize reverse vending to automate the process. These machines instantly identify, count and sort eligible containers, and pay out the correct deposit refund – as a more hygienic, efficient and accurate alternative to manual, human handling.

The Basic Line is powered by TOMRA Essential Technology™, which utilizes 360° barcode scanning, an integrated camera, and precise weight and metal sensors, to recognize various objects and brands, and ensure accurate refunds.

Aleksander Mortensen, SVP Head of Solution Management at TOMRA Collection says, “Over our 50-year history, TOMRA Collection has proven its ability to adapt and innovate to provide the solutions our customers need."

With the addition of the Basic Line, we are combining affordability and efficiency with the quality our customers have come to expect from TOMRA – in order to revolutionize recycling in a wider range of stores.

Coming next in the Basic Line is the TOMRA B5 Flaker, debuting in France. Equipped with a flaker, the RVM shreds the returned PET beverage bottles into small pieces, so that the plastic is in a ready format for retailers to send directly to recyclers. More products are expected in the Basic Line in 2024, including TOMRA B5 SoftDrop for accepting refillable glass bottles.

“Retailers play a vital role in DRSs, as the location where consumers both buy and return drink containers. The Basic Line offers a simple start to recycling, with a space-efficient solution that can help retailers be compliant with a DRS and optimize their operations,” said Elsa Sørensen, Product Manager for the Basic Line at TOMRA Collection.

With the Basic Line, you have everything you need to kickstart your store’s deposit return journey. TOMRA B5 Combi is the first product in this line, and we look forward to offering more products in the future.
