How Prima Noce achieves 1/500lbs shell/fiber piece count in walnuts with TOMRA Food

Prima Noce sets industry standards in walnut quality with TOMRA Food's advanced 5C sorters, boosting yield, reducing defects, and exceeding USDA grading specs through innovative sorting technology.

Prima Noce leads the walnut processing industry with their remarkably low shell and fiber counts (typically better than 1 per 500 lbs), exceeding USDA grading standards. Using TOMRA’s advanced object-based sorting and BSI+ laser technology, Prima Noce even delivers unmatched color consistency, routinely exceeding U.S. color specifications.

Prima Noce was one of the first companies in North America to adopt TOMRA’s groundbreaking 5C sorting technology. They accomplish their grading stats through a cascade sorting setup using three TOMRA 5C Sorters, each targeting specific defects. To preserve valuable large walnut pieces, TOMRA Food and Prima Noce engineered soft transition points between each sorter in the cascade, minimizing breakage and maximizing yield. From here, reject streams are intelligently reprocessed or converted into byproducts, while the highest-grade product goes straight to packing.
