Global reverse vending leader TOMRA Collection is now establishing a permanent presence in the Middle East region, obtaining all certifications and licences to operate in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The two office spaces will support the company’s efforts to deploy its innovative technology and solutions to transform the way resources are obtained, used, and reused.

TOMRA is establishing the first local experts in these areas. This will strengthen TOMRA’s presence in the Middle Eastern region, focusing particularly on the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

“Both UAE and Saudi Arabia have signed the Paris agreement and have committed to ambitious circular economy plans. TOMRA’s solutions are essential to achieving several of these ambitions and the overall goal of lowering the emissions and environmental impact related to resource use across the globe. A permanent presence in the region enables our team to engage systematically with potential partners, co-investors and stakeholders for optimal long-term solutions,” said Tove Andersen, President & CEO, TOMRA.

TOMRA technology and equipment providing advanced, sensor-based sorting of both mixed waste and minerals is already in active use in the region. With a regional presence, TOMRA will seek to offer a holistic suite of reverse vending solutions for resource optimization and management, including deposit and non-deposit (incentive-based) return systems and other innovative circular solutions.

Saudi Arabia has a population of approximately 38 million people and about 5-7% of household waste is currently recycled. The per capita consumption of bottled water is estimated at more than 200 liters annually, which is considered one of the highest rates in the world. The government’s ambition as part of Vision 2030 is to divert +90% of waste from landfill by 2034.
