TOMRA champions circular economy as Global Circularity Protocol launches at COP30
As the first globally harmonised voluntary framework of its kind, the GCP empowers companies of all sizes to measure, manage, and communicate their circular performance and impacts across value chains. By providing a clear, credible approach to tracking progress, it helps businesses embed circularity at the core of their strategies and operations.
TOMRA has held the role of a Business Champion since September 2024. As a global leader in resource recovery and sorting solutions, it has shared experience of best practice and real-life challenges to help shape how businesses implement and report on circularity.
Developed with over 150 experts from 80+ organizations, the GCP aligns with leading global standards, and enables credible, comparable reporting – supporting companies in meeting rising regulatory and stakeholder expectations.
TOMRA’s extensive experience in sorting technology and resource efficiency firmly establishes it as a frontrunner in the circular economy. Reinforcing this commitment, Tove Andersen, President and CEO of TOMRA, emphasized the impact the GCP will have:
“The GCP represents a significant step forward in aligning businesses around measurable, scalable circularity action. At TOMRA, we’re proud to champion this initiative and are fully committed to helping shape and implement the standards it sets. By creating a shared framework for progress, the GCP will accelerate the shift from intention to impact – driving systemic change and informing policies that advance a circular economy.”
Peter Bakker, President and CEO of WBCSD, added:
“The Global Circularity Protocol for Business sets a new benchmark for corporate performance and accountability. The GCP packs a serious punch. An Impact Analysis has revealed that the GCP could enable 100–120 billion tonnes of cumulative material savings by 2050 – equivalent to one year’s current global material consumption. And let’s not overlook the potential for accelerated emissions reduction. Adoption of the GCP could deliver 67–76 gigatons of CO₂ equivalent avoided by 2050, or about 1.3–1.5 times current annual global emissions.”
The launch of the GCP at COP30 marks a major milestone in advancing global collaboration toward a truly circular, regenerative economy – one in which TOMRA continues to play a leading role.
