TOMRA appointed sole reverse vending solutions provider for upcoming deposit return scheme in Tasmania, Australia

This week global reverse vending leader TOMRA has been appointed as the sole reverse vending machine (RVM) solution provider for Tasmania’s “Recycle Rewards” deposit return system (DRS) as Australia gets set to become the first continent fully covered by deposit return. Tasmania’s deposit return system is set to begin in mid-2025.

Tasmania will have a network of 49 conveniently located refund points, featuring over 100 reverse vending machines. This is the sixth Australian DRS where TOMRA’s world-leading RVM solutions will play an instrumental role. TOMRA’s automated return point solutions have proven to be very popular in Australia, offering consumers a broad variety of opportunities to return their eligible containers close to where they live, work and commute.

“TOMRA will bring our most modern RVM solutions to Tasmania, building on our significant experiences operating in the New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australian and Victorian deposit return systems,” said Marius Fraurud, EVP, Head of TOMRA Collection.

Our solutions are tailored to ensure we utilize our in-depth knowledge of the Australian market to drive maximum uptime, recycling outcomes and sustainability benefits.

Tasmania is the final piece of the deposit return system puzzle in Australia, with all states and territories now legislating deposit return and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for single-use drink containers.

TOMRA has 50 years' experience in deposit return, working in over 40 deposit markets, in every part of the value chain. The company has most recently provided reverse vending technology for Hungary and Ireland’s DRSs that began in January and February this year, and for Romania and the Australian state of Victoria that both launched DRSs in November 2023.

Commenting on the planned mobilization of the "Recycle Rewards” scheme, President of TOMRA Collection Asia Pacific, Tor Eirik Knutsen, acknowledged there is a lot of hard work ahead to deploy a network of automated RVM refund points, together with the accompanying logistics and material processing required from TOMRA’s Network Operator joint venture partner Cleanaway.

From mid-2025, the Tasmanian community will have a world-class scheme, with easy and convenient access to return eligible drink containers through TOMRA’s RVM-enabled network. TOMRA’s Tasmanian team is ready, and I am confident that they, together with support from the broader Australian and global TOMRA family, will deliver an exceptional outcome for Tasmania.

One of the features of Tasmania’s “Recycle Rewards” scheme will be the conveniently located reverse vending infrastructure solutions that use TOMRA’s technology to scan and verify each container as it enters the Tasmanian scheme.

“TOMRA RVM refund points have proven very popular, both globally and throughout Australia in markets where TOMRA operates, and we look forward to bringing our world-leading technology to Tasmania as part of the ‘Recycling Rewards’ scheme,” said Tor Eirik Knutsen.

Environmental benefits are one of the underpinning elements of all container refund schemes, with TOMRA Collection committed to the recycling of all materials collected through the ‘Recycling Rewards’ network of 49 conveniently located refund points. That means much of the collected plastics, aluminum and glass will be destined for high value, food-grade quality recycling.
